Hi! It's Miss Barb. We've got a colorful one for you today!
We love crayons here in Craft Corner. It's just one of the many tools we can use to express our creative selves. Recently, Miss Pam showed me how to take many crayon colors and combine them in a new way! Instead of coloring with your crayons, you use a bit of heat to turn them into a glorious craft that reminds me of stained glass.
Of course, I would be foolish not to issue a ⚠️WARNING⚠️ off the top: this is absolutely a craft you should be doing with the help of a grown-up. Your Reading Time Buddies will be ready to help you during Reading Time this Saturday. If you are doing this from home, wait until you have an adult to help with any sharp objects or hot objects. We promise that the help is worth it, and when you are done, you'll have a wonderful craft made from crayon wax!
🖍️Stained Glass Crayon🖍️

Supply List
🖍️ Crayons (Your choice of colors! Brighter colors work best. We suggest up to three colors.)
🖍️ Wax paper
🖍️ Pencil/Crayon sharpener OR cheese grater OR potato peeler ⚠️
🖍️ A muffin tin
🖍️ Craft glue
🖍️ Hot iron ⚠️
🖍️ Scissors
🖍️ Cardstock

Step 1:
Choose the crayons you want to use. Peel the paper off the crayon. Ask permission from an adult, then carefully use your choice of grating tool to shave pieces of crayon. (This might be the perfect use for crayons that have snapped or are well-loved.) Separate each color into the sections of the muffin tin.
Step 2:
Have an adult warm the iron up. Keep it on a Low setting. Not too hot! Cut a strip of wax paper, then fold it in half. Open the paper back up. Using your fingers, pinch a little bit of the crayon shavings and sprinkle them onto the wax paper. If you want a lot of colors, keep space between them so they melt evenly. Otherwise, the colors will not be very clear. Miss Pam created the black crayon-shaped template out of card stock: if you are making this at home, you will have to create and cut out something similar.
Step 3:
Fold the wax paper back, sandwiching your wax shavings in between both sides. Cover the wax paper with a paper towel. With adult help and supervision, run the warm iron all over the wax paper. Check your project every few moments. Check to see if it’s melted nicely or if you need to touch up any parts. Let it cool before handling. Don’t forget to turn off the iron.
Step 4:
Use craft glue to attach the crayon template onto the wax paper. Set it aside to dry for a bit. Then, carefully use the scissors to cut the excess wax paper off around the template.

And there you have it! Hang it near a window (probably not on hot days), on your fridge, in your room, or wherever you need a little pop of color! Perhaps it can be a reminder for you about how important color is, especially when many different shades are used to create something wonderful.
Don't forget to attend Reading Time so you can make one of your own! Color Your World is Saturday, March 14th. We will have all the parts of this craft ready to go, including a "hot iron area" to ensure that everyone is remaining safe.
