September 2026 - Symmetrical Mariposa

Hi! It's me, Miss Barb!

It's been a while since we've had a regular Craft Corner, but I am back with another beautiful craft for you this month! And, I have a new word for you to learn. It's a word I just learned myself because it's a Spanish word: mariposa. That's the word for "butterfly" en español.

There will be a lot of butterflies/mariposas at our Multilingual Story Time this Saturday. Your unique mariposa crafts will be among them. Let's flutter our way to what you'll be making!

Supply List

🦋 White cardstock butterfly shape

🦋 Washable tempera paint

🦋 Paint sponge dabbers

🦋 Craft glue

🦋 Craft stick (for the body)

🦋 Black marker

🦋 Pipe cleaner (for the antennae)

Step 1:

Fold the butterfly shape in half lengthwise, then open it back up and lay it out in front of you. The center crease acts as the line of symmetry and puts the symmetrical in our Symmetrical Mariposa!

Step 2:

Dab the sponge into the paint. Make sure to get the full circle shape covered in paint. Gently dab a bright spot of paint on only one side of the butterfly/mariposa. Keep the paint relatively wet so it transfers easily.

Repeat this step with 3-4 colors of paint, keeping all the painted dots on one side of the butterfly.

Step 3:

This is where the symmetry comes in! Carefully lift and fold the clean half of the paper onto the painted side. Press down firmly. Rub your hands across the paper to spread and mirror the paint.

Step 4:

Open the paper carefully to see your matching butterfly wing pattern. Let the paint dry completely.

Step 5:

While waiting for the piece to dry, color the craft stick with the marker. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the stick a few times. Then, pull the loose ends up and bend the ends to form the antenna. Glue the stick to the front of the wings to create the body. (I added a circle gem to make a head.)

And that's it! Once it is dry, you can pretend your mariposa is flying, you can glue on a magnet and stick it to the fridge, or you could give it to a friend as a gift.
